2023 Dallas Cowboys NFL Draft

 

                 

                    

         The Dallas Cowboys finished the 2022 season with a record of 12-5... Good for some teams, but substandard for America's Team. Defense was the top item on the menu and the Cowboys went shopping at Ann Arbor, Michigan.. They had the 26th overall pick in the first round, and went for help on the defensive line..

     Mazi Smith is 6 foot 3 inches tall and weighs in at 357 pounds..He was the captain of the Michigan team in 2022 and their vocal team leader. He anchored the defensive front for the Wolverines and coaches say he loved the contact..

     Smith can learn from veterans on the team and also get in on some of action. He was a first team selection on the Big 10 All-Conference team. At the NFL Combine Smith vertically jumped 29 and a half inches and recorded a broad jump of eight feet eleven inches. His hands are said to be nine and three-quarter inches wide.

    As long as the Cowboys were in Ann Arbor, they stuck around for their second round pick..

    Needing a tight end, the Cowboys picked up Luke Schoonmaker, a six foot five inch monster tipping the scales at 251 pounds. Didn't start the 2022 season as the top tight end for Michigan but worked his way into the starting line-up. 

   Schoonmaker ran a 4.63 forty yard dash at the NFL Combine and posted a 33 and a half inch vertical jump, and that was 5th overall among all tight ends. Also at the top of the charts for overall athletic scores when he recorded a 9.86 out of 10.

    In the 3rd round Dallas returned to the Lone Star State when they picked up DeMarvion Overshown of the University of Texas..

      Overshown was the 90th overall pick in the draft, and he stands six foot four inches tall and weighs 240 pounds. His hometown is Arp, Texas, so he will be staying home for his professional career. Overshown's nickname among teammates is 'Agent Zero', referring to his jersey number.. but he won't be able to keep it with Dallas. Cowboy safety Jayron Kearse has already claimed the zero number. 

 Overshown was a 1st Team All Big-12 selection, and among his 96 tackles for the Horns this year, 10 went for negative yardage. He also had 4 quarterback sacks.. He played safety for Texas his first two years with the team before moving to linebacker. At the NFL Combine he posted a 4.6 forty yard dash. He also was a semi-finalist for the Butkus Award, that goes to the top college linebacker.. Zero started 33 of 50 games for the Longhorns..

    In the 4th round Dallas moved to the west coast for more help on the defensive line... Viliami Fehoko of San Jose State University.

Fehoko is 6 foot 4 and 267 pounds.. The 129th overall pick had a nickname of 'Backfield Bully' since he was in opponents backfield so often.  Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and named to the All-Conference Team.  Actually, it was the second year in a row Fehoko has been All-Conference. He led the team in tackles behind the line of scrimmage, sacks, and forced fumbles. Coaches say he is full-speed on every play and always around the ball. 

     In the 5th round the Cowboys went cross country to find some help for the offensive line...

   Asim Richards of the University of North Carolina stands six foot four inches tall and tips the scales at 307 pounds.. He by-passes his senior year to come out a year early..  He is young, but coaches call his play solid with great footwork..

     At the NFL Combine, coaches were impressed with Richards' command of his position, but needs to work on his hands.. He possesses a good first punch, but fails to maintain his control of defensive players.. Also could gain some aggression in his play, as coaches say he is just a good guy.. 

    When Round 6 rolled around the Cowboys used a future pick to move up in the draft to the 178th overall spot.. and they used the pick to select Eric Scott, Jr of Southern Mississippi University..

     Scott is a cornerback and is six foot two and 202 pounds...He is big and physical... In three years at Hattiesburg he recorded 60 tackles, 5 interceptions, 16 passes batted away, and two fumbles recovered.. Two of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns. Great athletic traits and a nose for the ball, but sometimes takes bad angles to the ball carrier. His coaches say he will fight for a spot on the Dallas roster..

    Dallas also had its regular pick in the 6th round (212 overall) and with it they tugged in the heart strings of Cowboys fans across the country...

   

 

     The Cowboys picked running back Deuce Vaughn of Kansas State University.. His father is a member of the coaching staff of Dallas and got to call his son with the good news... Deuce is five foot five and weighs 179 pounds.. His quickness and ability to turn on a dime has given him the nickname of Houdini...

       Deuce is a two-time First Team All-American and to call him quick is a gross understatement. He ran and caught passes for 1,936 yards in 2022,. 1558 yards rushing alone to finish 8th in the country..As a junior, he scored 22 touchdowns for the Jayhawks.

     The 7th round had the Cowboys with the 244 overall pick and they selected another wide receiver in the person of Jalen Brooks of the University of South Carolina..

      Brooks is six foot one and weighs in at 201 pounds.. He is an aggressive player but had a very poor showing at the NFL Combine.. His 4.69 in the 40 yard dash was the worst among wide receivers..

    He had 33 receptions for 504 yards in 2022, scoring one touchdown via the pass and one rushing the ball.  Over three years with the Gamecocks, Brooks had 110 catches for 1,833 yards and 12 touchdowns.. He is the 5th member of South Carolina to be drafted into the NFL this weekend.

     That rounds out the drafted players for this draft.. Now it will be up to the coaching staff to fan out and seek undrafted players to become free agent acquisitions. That is the route that Tony Romo and Drew Pearson traveled to become All=Pro members of the Dallas Cowboys... 

 

CZ P10s

 

                                                        CZ P10s

       CZ has been manufacturing firearms since the 1930s. The company's name is Ceska zbrojovka, which translates to Czech Armory. They sold their first firearms to civilian and the Czech military in 1937 and the world was impressed with their quality. In 1939 when Germany invaded Czechoslovakia the CZ plant was one of the Nazi's primary objectives.

   I bought my first CZ pistol in 2005 when I read an article that stated: "The CZ75b is carried by more security, military, and law enforcement than any other pistol in the world." I ordered mine that day and have never regretted it. I can't go to the range without someone wanting to see it or fire a few rounds. I would not trade it for anything less than Halle Berry. 

      Now let's check in on the CZ P10s..

   I looked for a CZ P10s for about three months before success. It comes in a hard plastic CZ case that has dual latches and extremely sturdy. Inside I found my pistol, two magazines, a cleaning rod, bore brush, lock, owner's manual, and three different backs straps. They ensure you find a comfortable grip on the pistol. They come in small, medium, and large. The famous CZ grip that I loved from my 75b is also on the P10s model. Your hand just feels 'at home' when griping a CZ pistol.. The texturing on the P10s is on all four sides of the grip. It is a good feel with the texturing; I even wet my hand and still had a firm handle on the pistol. Once gripping it there is absolutely no slippage. CZ has even placed a handy textured spot on the frame to keep your index finger when not on the trigger..

     Speaking of triggers, it is one of the best I have in my collection, and I own a CZ75b, a Glock 19, Walther PPKs, German P38, Smith-Wesson Snub Nose 38, Ruger Mk III, a Remington R1 1911, a Taurus 380, Mossburg & Winchester shotguns, and two Model 700 Remington deer rifles. The trigger on the P10s has about a quarter inch of play until it get firm and then a crisp break. The reset is only about an eighth of an inch and it's ready for business again. The trigger pull is around four and a half pounds of pressure to engage. The trigger guard is ample for even the biggest of hands. I tried it with gardening gloves on and had no problem.

   Note: The frame has one picatinny rail for an accessory, whether it is a light or red dot sight. 

   The P10 series is CZ's second attempt into the striker fired field of firearms. They made a model back in the 1990's but it failed to make a good impression and it was pulled from production. The P10 series is CZ's effort to get back into the striker fired market that has been so successful in the United States. 

   The P10s is six and a half inches long, four and a half inches tall, and one and a quarter inches wide. The frame is alloy and the slide is steel and weighs one pound eight ounces when empty. It is almost identical in size to the Glock 19, while the P10c is a dead ringer for the Glock 17. The Smith-Wesson M&P and the Taurus G2 all fit this similar size range, but the Taurus falls behind when it comes to quality of workmanship.

       The P10s comes with two magazines and each holds twelve rounds of 9mm Parabellum (Luger) ammunition. The magazine well in the grip is beveled for easy access. The magazine release is on the left side of the pistol, but can be relocated to the right side for lefties. The P10c has a mag release on both sides of the pistol, but that is not the case with the P10s.

   The slide release (or lock back) is on both sides of the pistol and fit very close to frame to prevent any snagging or catching anything. Some have found this slide release tab to be stiff and hard to actuate, but I found that if I pull the slide to the rear just a fraction of an inch the release button works fine. 

   The beaver tail (or undercut) forces your hand to grip the P10s up high but there is enough overhang to prevent slide bite unless you have really fat hands. The overall grip is extremely comfortable and it is hard NOT to grip the pistol properly.

    

    The P10s comes with a tritium front sight with an orange ring around it for easy acquisition. The rear sight is all blacked out with a notch in it to locate your orange spot. It sounds pretty basic but it works well and I like it.

   The P10s does not have an external safety on the frame or the slide. It does have the trigger safety introduced by Glock back in the 1980's. The small plastic pin has to be pulled at the same time as the trigger to fire the weapon. Internally there is a striker safety that prevents the pistol from being fired should you drop it.

     The P10s has serrations on the front and rear of the slide, and they are serious serrations. It makes for a rather easy grip to rack the slide without any problem. I usually only use the rear serrations to cock the pistol, but the front ones make it easy to peep into the firing chamber if you are unsure if it is loaded or not.

    The takedown tabs are identical to those on a Glock. Remove the magazine, pull the trigger, then pull back the slide about a quarter of an inch, pull down the tabs on both sides of the slide, and it will glide right off the front of the pistol. The barrel is three and a half inches long and built like a Mack Truck. Dual recoil springs and a plastic guide rod. That is about as far as CZ wants you to field strip the pistol.

   SUMMATION:  This is my new everyday carry. Previously I carried a Polish P64 pistol, but it was solid steel and only a six round magazine. It also shot the 9X18 Makarov ammo, which is sometimes difficult to find. My local dealer gave me three hundred trade-in on the P10s to make the deal a bit sweeter. The P10s fits my existing holster and is much lighter in weight. I am a happy camper.

Dallas Cowboys 2022 College Draft

    In retrospect, the Dallas Cowboys had weak spots in their defense in 2021 and that was at the top of the list as they headed for Las Vegas to try and improve for 2022. So wouldn't you know they would select an offensive lineman with their number one pick.

   Dallas had the 24th selection in the 1st round and they went after offensive tackle Tyler Smith of Tulsa University. He is 6 foot 5 and weighs in at 325 pounds. Actually he will be coming home as he was born and raised in Fort Worth. Tyler just turned 21 years of age last month and should compete with Connor Williams for the left guard spot to gain some experience before moving over to left tackle when Tyron Smith retires. Coaches say Tyler Smith is a big speciman that excells at run blocking. The Cowboys have had good luck when picking offensive lineman with their #1 pick...Tyron Smith in 2011, center Travis Frederick in 2013, and guard Zack Martin in 2014. All were named to All-Pro teams very quickly.

        Dallas must have high expectations for Smith as they have issued him #73 as a uniform number.. That was the number of Larry Allen who dominated the offensive line as a Cowboy and who John Madden called the best lineman he had ever seen..

    In the second round Dallas had the 56th selection and went for defensive line help when they picked Sam Williams from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). He is 6'3'' and 261 pounds.

     Williams is extremely athletic for his position and ran a 4.46 at the NFL Combine, and also a 36 inch vertical jump. His final year at Ole Miss saw him record a school record 12.5 quarterback sacks. Until then the record had stood for 31 years. He was a three year starter for the Rebels and an All-SEC performer. Long arms make him a natural at this position. With the loss of Randy Gregory to free agency, Williams should find some playing time and keep opponents from double teaming Micah Parsons.

    In the 3rd round Dallas had the 88th overall pick and went for help at wide receiver.. Having lost both Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson to free agency, they picked Jalen Tolbert of South Alabama.

    Tolbert is 6 foot one and tips the scales at 195 pounds. He was almost picked in the 2nd round, but Dallas was surprised when he was still available in the 3rd. He is the all-time leading receiver for South Alabama and had 22 touchdown catches his senior year. Tolbert averaged better than 17 yards per catch.. He is a small school product but stood out in playing in the Senior Bowl. Can play outside or in the slot....also a punt returner.

    In the 4th round the Cowboys were choosing the 129th player and he turned out to be tight end Jake Ferguson from the University of Wisconsin.

     Fergy is six foot five and weighs 250 pounds.. His father and grandfather all played for the Badgers. Jake was named to the All-Big Ten team in 2020 and 2021. In 47 games played for Wisconsin he scored 13 touchdowns... A better pass receiver than a run blocker but that is something Dan Quinn's squad can work on.. At the NFL Combine he broad jumped 118 inches from a standing spot. He possesses 9 and a half inch wide hands. His college coaches say he is an overachiever and the last to leave the practice field. Should be a back-up to Dalton Schultz this season..

B A Z I N G A... Dallas had four (4) picks in the 5th round and really made an impact on that shopping list for America's Team..

Dallas got more help on the offensive line when they chose big tackle Matt Waletzko of North Dakota.. He is 6 foot 7 and weighs in at 310 pounds. He played in 28 games in 4 seasons with the Fighting Hawks, including 10 games this past season. He is the second offensive lineman Dallas selected (#1 Tyler Smith). Good lateral movement and quick off the line. The Cowboys project him as a possible back-up to Tyron Smith at left tackle or right tackle Terence Steele.

    With the 167th pick Dallas picked cornerback DaRon Bland of Fresno State.. He weighs in a 197 pounds and stands six foot one. Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn loves big, rangy corners that go for the ball, and that is what they got in Bland. In track & field competition, Bland was the school's long jumper and 60 meter dash specialist. He ran a 4.46 in his Pro Day debut. Should compete for a starting spot as Dallas is extremely young on the flanks.

   The 176th selection saw Dallas going to Baton Rouge for the second year in a row. Last year it was Jabril Cox and this time the Cowboys chose linebacker Damone Clark, a 6 foot 2 inch, 240 pounder. He had surgery in March to have spinal fusion for a herniated disk, but Dallas likes the long term possibilities for this Bengal Tiger. He was a Butkus Award finalist after leading the SEC in tackles with 135.

  With the 178th overall pick, Dallas chose defensive tackle John Ridgeway of Arkansas. He stands 6 foot 5 and weighs 321 pounds. He will be only the second Arkansas player picked by Jerry Jones since he acquired the team. Big bodied Ridgeway should take up a lot of space in the middle of the line. He played 3 years at Illinois State before transferring to Arkansas. He told Jones he would dominate for the Cowboys.

    Moving to the 6th round, Dallas had the 193rd pick and with it they went for linebacker Devin Harper of Oklahoma State.. He is an even 6 feet tall and weighs 235 pounds..

    Thanks to the Covid 19 scare, Harper played five seasons in Stillwater. He started 16 of 59 games played for the collegiate Cowboys. In 2021 he made eleven tackles for a loss and six quarterback sacks enroute to All-Big 12 honors. Look for him to play special teams immediately as he finds his way into the scheme of Dan Quinn's defense. Harper was impressive with his speed (4.49) and athletic ability at the OSU Pro Day..

 The Cowboys did not have a pick in the 7th round, but made up for it with four players in the 5th round. The coaching staff has already scattered across the country in search of free agent players who did not make the draft. A couple of the draftees have already come to Dallas for a face to face meeting with the coaching staff. A couple of team meetings are scheduled before the August beginning of training camp.. All of the players look good on paper but the thining out will begin at training camp... Good Luck to all.

Dallas Cowboys 2021 College Draft Picks

 

     2021 NFL College Draft

       The Dallas Cowboys went into the 2021 College Draft looking for help on the defensive side of the ball...and for good reason. Dallas had one of the worst defenses in the NFL in 2020. The Cowboys had the 10th overall selection in this years draft, but at the last minute they traded that pick to Philadelphia (?) for an additional pick and dropped to the 12th overall position.. With the 12th pick Dallas went to Penn State for linebacker help..

     Number 11 is Micah Parsons, who tips the scales at 245 pounds and stands 6 foot 3. With the recent retirement of Sean Lee (also from Penn State) the Cowboys have a serious need at the linebacker position. Experts are calling Parsons the best linebacker in this years draft. He sat out the 2020 season fearing an injury would hurt his chances in the draft. He possess outstanding speed and is a physical punisher when he makes the tackle. If he is not in the starting line-up in game one..something is wrong.

   Round two of the College Draft saw the Cowboys continue on the defensive as they went for Cornerback Kelvin Joseph of Kentucky.

    Dallas attempted to trade up in the second round but talks with the New York Jets fell threw. With the 44th overall pick the Cowboys hopefully can upgrade a very porous secondary. Joseph played three years at Louisiana State University, but after altercations with the coaching staff, he transferred to Kentucky. He is 6 foot 1 and weighs 197 pounds. Exceptionally good at man-to-man coverage and is big, fast, and very athletic...BUT needs to control that temper. Loves to hit and make tackles. Coaches say he is very cocky and very confident in his abilities.

   Dallas had three picks in the third round of the draft and continued to look for help for defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. The first of three selections in the third found the Cowboys going for defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa.

    First problem here will be trying to get his name on the back of a jersey.. Odighizuwa is 6 foot 2 and 280 pounds and saw action all four years at U.C.L.A. He was first team All Pac12 and named the top defensive lineman in the 2021 Senior Bowl. Recorded 30 tackles in seven games for the Bruins and could find a spot on the team with the sudden retirement of Tyrone Crawford last month.

    The second third-round pick for Dallas was the 84th overall selection and Dallas continued to try and shore up the defensive line by picking end Chauncey Golston of Iowa.

Golston is 6 foot 5 and 270 pounds of solid muscle, and the first Hawkeye taken in this years draft. He was honorable mention to the All Big-10 Conference and led the team with 45 tackles and 5 and a half sacks his senior season. Coaches say he is a great edge rusher and excels against the running game. 

   The third pick in the third round found Dallas looking to the great Northwest when they selected Nahshon Wright, a giant of a cornerback from Oregon State University.

     Wright is 6 foot 4 and 188 pounds and the tallest cornerback in college football in 2020. He was the 99th overall pick in the draft. Coaches named Wright to the All Big 12 Conference Team after last season. In his final year Wright recorded 64 tackles with one sack and five interceptions. Against the pass he also recorded eleven pass breakups. He bypassed his senior season to apply for the NFL draft.

   The Cowboys had two selections in the fourth round of the draft and with the first one they made the call to Jabril Cox of L.S.U.

    Cox is 6 foot 3 and 232 pounds and was the 115th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent three years at North Dakota State and the Buffs were small college national champions all three years. For his senior year he transferred to Baton Rouge. In 2020 he recorded 58 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 6 and a half tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He also is credited with knocking down 5 pass attempts. LSU coaches say the sky is the limit for this one as he loves to 'get his hands dirty.' His position coach says he lives for the hard contact of an open field tackle.

     The second selection of the fourth round (138th overall) found the Cowboys making their first pick for an offensive player..and a controversial one at that.

 Dallas picked Josh Ball, a giant offensive tackle from Marshall University. This was the 138th overall pick in the draft. Ball played for Florida State for three years but transferred to Marshall after being suspended at Florida State for a domestic abuse charge from an ex-girlfriend. Dallas Vice-President Stephen Jones said the team did an in depth background check on Ball and the team is confident he is now headed in the right direction. Ball is 6 foot 5 and 323 pounds.

   In the fifth round of the NFL Draft the Cowboys found another offensive player to their liking in wide receiver Simi Fehoko of Stanford University.

Fehoko is the 179th overall pick and stands 6 foot 4 and 222 pounds. Lots of speed in Fehoko as he ran a 4.40 in his forty yard sprint at the Stanford pro day for NFL scouts. In 2020 he recorded 61 catches for 1140 yards and 9 touchdowns. In the game against rival UCLA he had 16 catches alone. With Michael Gallop becoming a free agent next season, Fehoko could be in a good position to replace him.

  In the sixth round of the draft Dallas returned to their defensive mode (that's 7 out of 9 picks for the defense, if you're keeping count) when they returned to Kentucky for additional line help.

Quinton Bohanna was the 192 overall pick in this years draft and stands 6 foot 4 and tips the scales at 357 pounds. In 2020 Bohanna had 58 tackles for the Wildcats, 9 and a half behind the line of scrimmage. He also forced two fumbles and recovered one of them. Cowboy coaches say they see him as a nose tackle and a sure run stopper. Kentucky coaches say he is the sleeper of the draft and should have gone much higher in the selection process.

   With their seventh and final pick, Dallas found a player to help with the injuries to the offensive line last year. Guard Matt Farniok of the University of Nebraska..

   Farniok is 6 foot 6 and 330 pounds. He is a two time team captain for the Huskers and has started every game for the past two seasons at Lincoln. Nebraska coaches say he is a great blocker in the running game. A couple of times injuries forced Nebraska to use Farniok at the center position and he came through with flying colors. He was named to the All Big 10 Conference honor team and Nebraska named him their offensive lineman of the year in 2020.

   That completes the 2021 NFL draft for the Cowboys, but coaches have already fanned out across the country searching for free agents to help the team. Rumors have it that two wide receivers (one from Texas and one from Texas Tech) have already signed with Dallas. We wish all the players good luck as they move to the professional game. With the return of quarterback Dak Prescott from his major injury last year, the team can only get better..... Please !
