Summer Saustice Contest

Texoma Harley Davidson held a salsa contest
on Saturday,...actually the shindig was called the
"Summer Saustice Contest" and attracted about
9-10 entries. I am what you would call a veteran
salsa man. I have been eating the hot stuff since
I was a little boy. My older brother was hooked on
Mexican food and when I tagged along I had to eat
whatever he was buying. He made sure I became
acquainted with jalapenos from the start. On Saturday
you could sample each entry as much as you wanted
before casting your vote. T-Bone's restaurant and
Chipolte's Mexican Grill donated plenty of chips for
the contest. Local HOG members Dave & Carol won
first place with a concoction filled with five different
peppers, two different onions, along with a couple
cans of strained tomatoes (& other secret items).
The end result was a salsa that would knock your
socks off. It left a great taste in your mouth, BUT
about seven seconds later you would trade all of
your earthly possessions for something to drink.
The Sun-Bru girls were also on hand to wash the
bikes for a small donation. These girls were pretty
good looking and the line to have your bike washed was
fairly long. Early estimates on the crowd were around
2,000 and the dealership was well pleased with the turnout.
The event was good all around and the
plans for next month are still being formulated. I'll
keep you updated....

State Champion

What goes around,..comes around. My friend, Rick
Pledger, is on familiar ground again. Rick won '1st Place'
at the American Trucking Association State Championship
Driving Rodeo yesterday in College Station, Texas. The
competition is among drivers from various companies and
the competitors come from different regions of Texas. Rick
captured first place at the North Texas Regional in Fort Worth
last month to qualify for the State competition. Drivers were
submitted to a battery of written tests on Friday and then
the actual driving course on Saturday. The results were announced
at a banquet Saturday evening. Rick was the top performer in
the sleeper class, just as he was in 2001 when he went on to
win the National Championship. This years Nationals will be held
in Columbus, Ohio later this summer. I am not a betting
man,.. but when Seabiscuit is running against plow horses,.. it
is an easy decision.. Bring Home the Gold, Rick !!!!

Hot Summer Day

The temperature has been in the middle to upper
90's this week so we decided to take the grandkids
for a swim. Grandson Joe Bob is eleven years old and
still working on his swimming stroke. He had more
fun just jumping in the pool than he did thrashing
about in the water. His younger sister, the newly
anointed seven year old, Lilly, was a little apprehensive
when we first got to the pool, but relaxed and
really enjoyed it after about five minutes. She is
really fearless for her age. She was diving off the
top steps of the pool and just as she was about to
go under, I would catch her. It was good therapy
just to hear the kids cackling with laughter. Granny
brought some refreshments and we made it one of
the more pleasant afternoons in recent times. It is
still a mystery to me how you can be in so much water,
but still work up a thirst while swimming. The
cool grapes and RC cola did the trick, and I also
used the grapes as bait for the kids to do tricks. The
water temperature was 85 degrees and the ambient
temperature was 96. Funny how you can still be chilled
when you get OUT of the water, but the concrete bank
of the pool was hot enough to blister your feet if you
stayed in one spot too long. This was a great day...and
probably what retirement is suppose to be.

Big 12 Conference down to 10

If you are keeping up with the shenanigans of the Big 12 Conference this week,
here is the latest. Pac 10 Commissioner Larry Scott
had visions of creating a Super Conference to dominate
college athletics. He has been crisscrossing the country
in his Lear jet trying to coerce members of the Big 12
Conference into defecting to his West Coast Mob...but
he only wanted Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma State and Colorado. The others were to be left to fend for
themselves. Kansas and Kansas State are basketball
schools and never will compete with the others in football. The
University of Colorado fell victim to his smooth talking
spiel and will now join the Pac 10 Conference. The
University of Nebraska has never been comfortable
in the Big 12 Conference since 1996 when Texas and
Oklahoma became the big guns in the conference. The
Huskers are not accustomed to being a second echelon
outfit. Nebraska has decided to move to the Big Ten
Conference, thus making it the Big Eleven. The remaining
members of the Big 12 (now ten) are Texas...Texas A&M..
Texas Tech.. Oklahoma....Oklahoma State.. Baylor...
Iowa State.. Kansas... Kansas State...and Missouri.
In my news reporting days one of the key things to investigate
in any story is...who gets the money? The University of Texas
had wanted a bigger share of the pie when conference members
divided the dividends. Texas will now be allowed to start their
own TV Network and that is expected to bring in an additional
12-15 million dollars a year. I have no dog in this hunt as I am
a SMU man,...and I remember VIVIDLY in 1996 when Texas,
A&M, Tech, and Baylor dropped the old Southwest Conference
like a hot potato to join the Big 8 Conference,...now the Big 12
or Big 10 or whatever they are gonna call this band of thieves.
As you can probably detect, I am still a bit on the raw side from
their actions in 1996. SMU, Rice, Houston, and Arkansas were left to
find their own futures without any concern from the bigger
schools. The infighting this week between conference members
is just dirty laundry being exposed that has been there all along.
Nobody loves the flag of Texas anymore than me,...except on
the football field !!

D-Day Plus 66 Years

History will confirm that the single most important event of the twentieth century was the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France on the morning of June 6, 1944. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi’s had covered the continent of Europe with a blanket of oppression and murder for over four years. All during that period the Germans knew that it was a matter of time before Great Britain and America would try and invade the continent. It happened this day sixty-six years ago. Supreme Allied Commander of all Allied Forces, Dwight D. Eisenhower was the one that had to make the call when and where the Allies would invade Europe. When Ike made the decision to ‘Go’ he was then out of the loop. The Supreme Commander was now just an observer to the actions going on around him. The idleness of June 5, 1944 was unbearable to Ike and he wanted to go and visit some of the units on the eve of the great invasion. His junior officers said no,..German spies were known to be in England and they would love the opportunity to assassinate Ike. To culminate at the beaches of Normandy at six-thirty in the morning, some of the airborne units had to depart England around midnight to reach their objectives by 2am on the 6th. Ike visited the 101st Airborne Division to wish the Eagles good luck and Godspeed. The Allies would be converging on the Normandy coastline in five sections. The beaches labeled Gold, Sword, and Juno were the responsibility of the British, Canadians, Australians, and Poles. The beaches of Utah and Omaha were given to the United States. While the Marines were fighting in the Pacific, the European campaign was given to the U.S. Army… That day the First Army.. Fifth Corp.. Seventh Corp.. First Infantry Division..4th Infantry Division.. and the 29th Infantry Division were looking to get a foothold on the European coast. The 82nd Airborne Division would be dropped behind Omaha Beach, and the 101st Airborne Division would be dropped behind Utah. History shows that both airborne units missed their drop zones, but as one of my old airborne sergeants used to say, “the most dangerous weapon on the battlefield is an airborne soldier in a bad attitude with a weapon in his hands.” Groups of 82nd and 101st troopers formed up to capture Ste Mere-Eglise on the first day and also cut off the coastline from German reserve forces. Any school child will tell you the outcome of the invasion, but remember, nine thousand American soldiers were killed or wounded that first day. First Army Commanding General Omar Bradley almost called for the ships to come back to evacuate his troops. Movies and TV have almost made it look like a cakewalk to Berlin. The airborne troopers completed their objectives, but at great cost. The 101st Airborne Division lost five out of every six soldiers to wounds or death. The 82nd also had great losses, but not as extensive as the 101st. In the end, the Rangers climbed the cliffs, the Engineers destroyed the obstacles on the beaches..and the Infantry,..they waded ashore and fought all the way to Berlin. Thank you to all the Fathers, Sons, Brothers, Uncles, and Cousins who gave America this great country to live in. They are all members of the Great Generation of Americans to whom we all owe our everything.

The Wizard of Westwood

I read the story this morning and was sadden
to learn that legendary basketball coach John Wooden
had died at the age of 99. Wooden's teams at U.C.L.A.
brinked on the edge of being unbeatable during the late
1960's through 1975. Wooden was born and raised
in Indiana and baseball was his favorite sport as a
youngster, but when you are from Indiana basketball
can't be too far behind. Wooden always wanted to be
a coach and his first job was at Central High School in
South Bend. He married his high school sweetheart and
Nell would be the centerpoint of his life for the next 53
years. After a record of 218 wins and 42 losses at Central,
the Woodens decided to head for the college ranks. He thought
he had the job at the University of Minnesota, but got
the call from U.C.L.A. instead. It too was a marriage made in
heaven. Wooden's first few teams never had a really tall
center, but good defense and the ability to run the fast
break made them into instant winners. From 1964 to 1975
U.C.L.A. won ten National Championships, including seven
in a row. There were four seasons where the Bruins did not
lose a single game, and at one time the winning streak reached
88 games in a row. Wooden instilled a discipline and patience
in his players that carried many of them to the pro games of
the National Basketball Association. Even after their college
careers many of them kept close ties with their old coach. They
would be sure to have breakfast or dinner with Wooden when
they came to Los Angeles. The U.C.L.A. list of great players seemed
endless.. Walt Hazard, Gail Goodrich, Keith Wilkes, Bill Walton, and
of course Kareem Abdul Jabbar. In 1975 at the Final Four Tournament
Wooden told his team that the Championship Game with the
University of Kentucky would be his last. The Wildcats were the
heavy favorite, but the Bruins would not let the Wizard go out on
a losing note and tamed the Wildcats 92-85 in the title game.
Wooden had been a loyal fan of the Bruins since his retirement and
always at his customary seat at home games. Former player Marques Johnson was a constant visitor to Wooden's modest Encino home and said the
coach's health really turned bad about two weeks ago. He died
overnight just four months from his 100th birthday,..but as Johnson
told reporters,.."the coach was never about numbers, in life or
basketball."
