1997 Plymouth Breeze

When last we heard... our family had unloaded a Mitsubishi Galant back on the dealership and we were in the market for another car. I had a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up to get me back and forth to work, but Momma needed a car to run her errands around town.

Hoyte Reudelhuber has a car dealership in Sherman and is a longtime friend of the family. Growing up in Dallas, my Dad would buy a new car from Hoyte every other year. Back in those days Hoyte was the leading salesman for Friendly Chevrolet when that dealership was on Lemmon Avenue near Love Field.
Hoyte had this 1997 Plymouth Breeze the dealership had used as a loan car for his dealership. The 1998 models were out so he wanted to sell it and upgrade to a newer model. We haggled a bit but I came home with the Breeze. Momma loved it because of its simplicity and easy to drive functions. One daughter used it to commute to college for a while, but it eventually came home to be Momma's car permanently.

The Breeze was a deep metallic emerald green in color with a beige interior. After a little wax and elbow grease it would really look good. The only problem we had with this car was in the transmission. It was over four years old when it started making whining noises for about a month and then went out completely, and it was like the car was in neutral in every gear. When I purchased the car Hoyte gave me a 5-year warrantee with the car to sweeten the deal and all I had to pay was a one-hundred dollar deductible for a brand new transmission. The Breeze was again quiet as a mouse and shifted perfectly. Momma was happy and had a dependable ride.

We had the Breeze for almost five years but when it came time to update in 2002 we were in for a surprise. I cleaned up the car and took it to Hoyte's dealership to see about trading for a new Chrysler, but they would only allow me eight hundred dollars for the Breeze. This was a car I bought from them, had it serviced regularly at this dealership, and now it was like they didn't want it back. I refused to let it go for this amount and returned home. Momma wrote up a nice sales ad for the Grayson County Shopper and the first couple that came to look at it ended up buying it for $3800. It was a good dependable car and we still see it around town on occasions, but now it was time to find Momma a new car. That one will be described in a future update.
