Texas Hill Country Ride

Every April a group of friends join my wife and I as we ride down
to the Hill Country of Texas. We rent an old mansion just outside of
Fredericksburg and have the whole house to ourselves for the weekend.
We usually aim for the third weekend in April for the change in the
weather. In the mornings you will need your leathers to fight the chill,
but by afternoon its down to jeans and tee shirts. One of the real test
for riders will be to 'ride the twisted sisters'. This refers to Texas Highways
335, 336, and 337. On these roads you will constantly be going up, coming
down, and curving left and right. It is not a course that I would suggest
for beginning riders!
Most of the small towns in this area cater to bikers as a prime source of
revenue, and the gas stations and restaurants are most friendly. A couple of
items that are 'must see' include a stop in Luckenbach, Texas (Willie & Waylon
were not there when we stopped), and the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum in
Vanderpool, Texas. The museum has the largest collection of old BSA,
Triumph, Nortons, Indians, and Aerial motorcycles that I have ever seen.
For the ladies, there is a great flower nursery called Wildseed Farms just east of Fredericksburg. The men will probably balk at stopping there, but once inside
they too will be amazed.
Food is an important part of any day for riders and I have a couple of suggestions. As you motor through Utopia, Texas there is a small cafe that serves great burgers & fries, and don't pass up the buttermilk pie. On the ride
back to the metroplex we passed through Stephenville and the 'Hard 8
Bar-B-Que' serves up some of the best that I have ever tasted.
This is just an idea for the next time you and your friends are looking for a
place to ride. It is easily reached in just a short time, and the scenery and
hospitality are without equal. Ride safe and have fun!!
